Llamada así en honor al rey español Carlos III. Comenzó a edificarse en 1763, bajo la dirección del ingeniero militar Silvestre Abarca. Se levantó en la ribera alta del Puerto de La Habana, zona que había quedado indefensa hasta ese momento. Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña (Fort of Saint Charles), colloquially known as La Cabaña, is an 18th-century fortress complex, the third-largest in the Americas, located on the elevated eastern side of the harbor entrance in Havana, Cuba.
