Description

"The City Hall, as we know it today, was completed at an early stage with the building facing the Plaza de Armas during the administration of Ramón de Castro y Gutiérrez, who ruled the island from 1795 to 1801. However, the seat dates back to 1602 and was located on Santo Cristo de la Salud Street and San Juan´s Cache. The cache frames the San Juan Entrance (“Puerta de San Juan”), which was the main entrance to the walled city. Through this door dignitaries made their solemn entry upon arriving at San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the year 1604 Santos Ochoa de Castro’s Government obtained the land facing the Plaza de Armas, and began the construction of the current venue building. The clock in one of its towers was installed in 1814 and its arched façade was built in the early 1840′s by Pedro García, inspired by the façade of Madrid City Hall. This construction was completed in 1842 under the governorship of Santiago Méndez Vigo. On the façade the Latin inscription on the coat of arms of Puerto Rico on the main entrance reads: “Love the light of justice who is at the service of the people”. In the first inner courtyard of this structure, was a cistern used by the residents of the walled city during the 17th Century. On the second floor, the Capitulary Room has a balcony overlooking the plaza as witness of important moments in the history of Puerto Rico". --Description from Website institucional del Municipio de San Juan de Puerto Rico, San Juan City Hall.
