This ceiba-tree was planted to replace the old one that stood here in 1519, at which date the first mass was celebrated in Havana by the conquerors, Diego Velasquez at this time founded the city, removing same from the south coast where it was previously located. The remains of Columbus were laid to rest into the chapel, before being placed in the Cathedral.
